Have you noticed that your skin feels less firm, fine lines are becoming more visible, or your usual skincare no longer gives you the same results?

These changes are common as skin matures. If you would like to improve your skin’s texture and support its natural collagen-building response, SkinPen® microneedling may be worth considering.

At Treatments by Joanna in Walton-on-Thames, the starting point is understanding your skin, then creating a treatment plan with realistic goals and enough time between appointments for recovery.

Why does skin change after 40?

Collagen is one of the proteins that gives skin its structure and strength. As we age, collagen production slows and existing collagen becomes damaged. Years of sun exposure also contribute to these changes.

During the menopause transition, hormonal changes can further affect skin thickness, moisture and elasticity. You may notice more dryness, fine lines or a loss of the firmness your skin once had.

These changes happen differently for everyone. Turning 40 does not mean you automatically need a procedure, but it can be a useful time to reassess what your skin needs. You can read more in my article Skin Rejuvenation After 40: SkinPen Microneedling in Walton-on-Thames.

How does SkinPen support collagen production?

SkinPen uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This activates a repair response that includes the formation and remodelling of collagen.

Rather than adding volume like a filler, the treatment encourages changes within your own skin over time.

SkinPen is conventional microneedling: it does not use radiofrequency heat. A sterile, single-use needle cartridge is used for each treatment, and the treatment depth is selected according to the area and your skin’s needs.

The aim is gradual improvement in skin quality, rather than an instant change to your facial shape.

What benefits can mature skin expect?

For suitable clients, microneedling may improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and some acne scars. Skin can gradually look smoother and feel firmer as remodelling takes place.

For women over 40, this can be particularly appealing when the goal is better skin quality while still looking like yourself.

It is important to distinguish improved skin quality from lifting. SkinPen does not replace lost facial volume or produce the same effect as surgery. More pronounced sagging may need a different approach.

Your consultation helps establish whether the changes you would like to see are realistic with microneedling.

How many sessions will I need?

A useful starting point for discussion is a course of three sessions, usually spaced around four to six weeks apart.

That is an example, not a fixed prescription. Your plan may be shorter or longer depending on the concern being treated, your skin’s response and how well it recovers. A fourth session may be considered after reviewing your progress.

The interval matters. Treatment stimulates a process that continues after you leave the studio; repeating it more frequently does not automatically produce better results.

Before each appointment, your skin should be reassessed rather than treating simply because another month has passed.

How often should I have maintenance treatments?

The initial course and maintenance serve different purposes.

The initial course aims to build improvement. Maintenance is considered later, once I have assessed the results and we have discussed what you would like to preserve or improve further.

There is no single maintenance schedule for every woman over 40. Some people may benefit from occasional additional treatments, while others can leave much longer intervals between sessions. General microneedling guidance includes maintenance around every six to twelve months.

A review around three months after your course can help me assess your progress and decide whether another treatment is appropriate. A review does not automatically mean another procedure.

Monthly microneedling indefinitely is not a requirement for maintaining healthy skin. The right plan balances your goals with your skin’s recovery and response.

When will I see results?

Some changes may become noticeable within a few weeks, but collagen remodelling is gradual. More meaningful improvements can take several months to develop.

This is why it helps to take consistent photographs before treatment and at follow-up, using similar lighting and angles.

Immediate post-treatment fullness is not the same as a lasting result: temporary swelling can affect how the skin looks.

What should I expect after treatment?

Redness, warmth, tightness and mild swelling are common short-term effects. Dryness or flaking may also occur. Recovery varies, so leave time for your skin to settle before an important event.

Microneedling carries risks, including infection, pigment changes and scarring, although these are less common than temporary irritation.

You will receive aftercare instructions covering skincare, makeup, exercise and sun exposure. Following these instructions is an important part of treatment. My article SkinPen Microneedling: What It Is, How It Works and What to Expect explains the appointment step by step.

Is SkinPen suitable for every mature skin?

Age alone does not determine suitability.

Active infection, inflamed acne, irritated skin, certain medical conditions, medication and a history of abnormal scarring can affect whether treatment is appropriate. Recent aesthetic procedures also need to be discussed.

If your skin has become more reactive during perimenopause or menopause, your skin barrier may need attention before considering microneedling.

During your consultation, I will review your skin, medical history, current products and previous treatments before deciding how to proceed.

How can I support the results at home?

Professional treatment works best alongside consistent everyday care.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, gentle cleansing and an appropriate moisturiser help protect your skin and support its barrier. Strong active ingredients should be paused and restarted according to your aftercare instructions.

Good skincare between appointments matters more than simply booking treatments more often.
